A transmission (gearbox) drain plug wrench is a specialized hand tool designed to remove and install the gearbox (transmission) drain plug without damaging the plug or the gearbox case. On classic cars like the Austin-Healey, the drain plug often sits in a tight, hard-to-reach spot and may have an unusual shape (e.g., internal hex, large hex, or notched plug) that standard wrenches or sockets don’t fit well.
The tool’s purpose is to provide the correct fit and leverage so you can break the plug loose, drain the old gear oil, and then reinstall the plug securely with the right sealing washer.
Classic British cars often have limited clearance around the gearbox drain plug because of the chassis, cross-members, fuel lines, or bodywork.
