My Story:
I bought my 1959 Bugeye Sprite in my senior year in High School (70-71). I found it for sale near Cherry Hill and Telegraph Rd. for under $200. My dad worked for Ford Motor Co. and was not overjoyed by my purchase. He made me park it on the street because it leaked oil, (all of his cars leaked oil too, but that was his excuse). I drove it everwhere until it had brake problems. Back then it took over a month to get parts from the “Dealer”. I found a 69 Camero to drive while I waited but never got the part and “Parked the bugeye for a “few” years.
Fast forward to 1997. It was time to restore the car while I was still working and had the money. I found the Michigan Healey Club and joined to find help with my “Project”. It turns out the club was planning the 1998 Conclave at Boyne Mtn. That lit the fire and I was all in to be completed for the big event. I made it with weeks to spare and have enjoyed driving and racing it ever since. We have made almost every Dream Cruises. Traditionally, we make it a point to find just the right person(s) that show the most interest in the car and let them sit in it and take a picture. Now we do this at every show or event. The kids and parents love it and we hope they get the bug for our cars. The future car enthusiast are out there, we just have to reach out to them… we just need to keep our cars restored for the next generation. Just doing our part.
