Axle stubs often protrude past the nut. A deep-well design ensures the socket reaches the nut without bottoming out on the axle shaft. Preferred for high torque to prevent “rounding” the corners of the nut. Usually 1/2″ drive for consumer vehicles or 3/4″ to 1″ drive for commercial trucks and duallys.
A standard chrome “tool kit” socket will likely crack under this pressure. Many hub nuts are “staked” or use nylon inserts. A precision-fit socket is required to break that initial friction without slipping and injuring the technician or damaging the spindle threads.
